SBU's Advocacy Corps
Stony Brook Advocacy Corps students use experience to land jobs and internships with congressional members.
Overview
The Stony Brook Advocacy Corps is a virtual program from the Office of Federal Relations that develops select students into effective, bipartisan policy advocates. Corps members participate in federal policy briefings related to student financial aid, science research, immigration reform, and other important higher education priorities provided by SBU’s Office of Federal Relations. Subsequently, SBU Advocacy Corps members meet with Congressional members and staff virtually to advocate for SBU priorities. SBU’s Advocacy Corps is a unique and rewarding opportunity for SBU students to hone their advocacy skills, learn about life on the Hill, and gain valuable experience for their resume.
Program Structure
Offered each Spring semster, Stony Brook Advocacy Corps members undergo an orientation and policy briefing provided by SBU’s Office of Federal Relations. This includes detailed presentations on successful advocacy strategies, lobbying law compliance, and an overview of the federal appropriations process. Subsequently, Advocacy Corps members will participate in virtual meetings with congressional offices and committee staff coordinated by SBU’s Office of Federal Relations. In addition to taking several advocacy meetings during the year, SBU Advocacy Corps members have the opportunity to engage SBU alumni working on the Hill and congressional staffers to learn more about careers in public service, policy, and advocacy. Advocacy Corps is entirely virtual.
