SUNY Tuition Credit
Financial Aid for New York State Students

The SUNY Tuition Credit is a financial aid program designed to assist eligible students attending a State University of New York (SUNY) institution by covering a portion of their tuition costs. This credit is awarded to students who receive the New York State Tuition Assistance Program (TAP) grant and is intended to bridge the gap between the TAP award and the full cost of SUNY tuition.

In order to determine your potential award a student must complete the FAFSA and TAP application  or DREAM Act application each year for payment

Undergraduate TAP Code: 0875

How the SUNY Tuition Credit Works

  • The credit is automatically applied to eligible students who have been awarded a TAP grant.
  • It helps cover the difference between the TAP award and the actual SUNY tuition rate, reducing out-of-pocket tuition costs.
  • The amount of the credit varies based on the student’s TAP award and the tuition rate set by SUNY each academic year.
Important Notes on Eligibility and Use:
  • Students must qualify for TAP to receive the SUNY Tuition Credit.
  • The credit is only applicable toward tuition and does not cover additional costs such as fees, housing, or books.
  • The credit amount is determined annually and may vary based on available state funding.

By supplementing the TAP grant, the SUNY Tuition Credit ensures that students have additional financial support, making higher education more affordable and accessible for New York State residents.

Why is my SUNY Tuition credit award estimated?

Stony Brook University estimates a SUNY Tuition Credit award for all New York State residents who file a FAFSA.  This estimate is based on the income information reported on the FAFSA.  Until the university receives the TAP application information from HESC this award is estimated.  Ensure you have completed the TAP application at hesc.ny.gov and your application includes Stony Brook University's School Code on your application.
