Awards We Advise On For Undergraduates

The opportunities on this page are those with which we work most closely and many require an on-campus nomination process.

Deadlines: Unless otherwise noted, applicants must apply by the Campus Deadlines listed below in order to be considered. Campus Deadlines are earlier than the National Deadlines listed on the individual program websites in order to allow adequate time for applicant interviews (if required) and review by campus selection committees.

Advising: Applicants seeking advising on any of the awards below should first attend any relevant information session on the award.

    Boren Awards

    Funding to study outside the U.S., Western Europe, Canada, Australia, or New Zealand for an academic year while learning a less commonly taught language. Shorter periods of study will be considered for STEM students.

    • Matriculated undergraduate or graduate students
    • All disciplines
    • U.S. citizens
    • Must demonstrate interest in a career in public service

    Goldwater Scholarship

    Funding for STEM students which may be applied to eligible expenses such as undergraduate tuition, fees, books, and housing for 1 to 2 academic years (depending on whether one applies as a sophomore or as a junior).

    • Sophomores or juniors (juniors preferred)
    • Natural Science, Mathematics, or Engineering fields only.
    • U.S. citizen, U.S. national, or U.S. permanent resident.
    • Must have research experience and plan to pursue a Ph.D. in one of the fields listed above.
    • Students who plan to study medicine are NOT eligible for the Goldwater Scholarship unless they are planning for a career as a researcher rather than as a practicing physician. 

    Pre-Application due November 2023; complete application due December 2023. Campus nomination required, late applications will not be considered.

    Beinecke Scholarship

    Funding for graduate study in the Arts, Humanities, or Social Sciences at any accredited university.

    • Juniors
    • Arts, Humanities, or Social Science fields
    • U.S. citizens or U.S. nationals from American Samoa or the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands
    • History of receiving need-based aid

    Funding for a graduate degree program related to public service.

    • Juniors

    • U.S. citizen
    • Must demonstrate strong interest in a public service-related career and potential as an agent of change

    Campus nomination required. Prospective candidates seeking SBU's nominationmust submit a pre-application in November 2023. Those invited to continue with the application process must submit the full and final application by the January 15, 2024 Campus Deadline. Late applications will not be considered.

    Churchill Scholarship

    Funding for graduate study at Cambridge University in Science, Mathematics, or Engineering.

    • Graduating seniors or recent alumni
    • Science, Mathematics, or Engineering fields
    • U.S. citizens
    • Must not yet have earned a Ph.D.

    DAAD Awards

    Funding for graduate study or independent research in Germany.

    • Graduating seniors or graduate students
    • All disciplines
    • Open to U.S. citizens and many foreign nationals
    • Language proficiency not required for matriculation in participating master's programs
    • Independent research projects in the Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences typically require good command of German

    Department of Energy (DOE) Computational Science Graduate Fellowship (CSGF)

    Funding for up to four years of Ph.D.-level study for students using computational modeling or simulation to advance their primary field of study in engineering and the physical, computer, mathematical, or life sciences. 

    • U.S. citizens or permanent residents
    • Graduating seniors and first-year graduate students
    • Engineering and the physical, computer, mathematical or life sciences

    Fulbright U.S. Student Program

    Funding to teach English, attend graduate school, or conduct independent research overseas in over 140 different countries for an academic year.

    • Graduating seniors, recent alumni, or graduate students
    • All disciplines
    • U.S. citizens
    • Prospective applicants should be aware of country-specific requirements, such as whether or not foreign language proficiency is required.
    • Must have obtained a Bachelor’s degree by the start of the program, but have not yet earned a PhD

    Gates Cambridge Scholarship

    Funding to pursue a full-time postgraduate degree in any subject available at the University of Cambridge.

    • Graduating seniors or recent alumni
    • All disciplines
    • Citizen of any country outside the United Kingdom
    • Commitment to working for the greater good

    Hertz Graduate Fellowship

    Five years of funding for students pursuing a PhD in the applied physical and biological sciences, mathematics, and engineering with demonstrated potential to be future leaders and innovators.

    • Graduating seniors or students in their first year of graduate studies
    • U.S. citizen or permanent resident
    • Applied Physical and Biological Sciences, Mathematics and Engineering fields
    • Students willing to morally commit to make their skills available to the United States in time of national emergency.

    Knight Hennessy Scholars

    An elite cohort of only 100 high-achieving students from around the world will receive full funding as they pursue any graduate degree at Stanford University.

    • Graduating seniors
    • Any citizenship
    • Be applying to enter a Stanford graduate program
    • Be eligible to apply for admission to the full-time graduate degree program of interest at Stanford (for example, but not limited to, DFA, Eng, JD, MA, MBA, MD, MFA, MS, PhD) or if you plan on pursuing one of Stanford’s many joint- and dual- graduate degree options (for example, but not limited to, MD+PhD, JD+MA, MBA+MS)
    • Must file both the Knight-Hennessy Scholars application AND the application to the individual department in which they are interested, checkout additional details regarding eligibility

    Marshall Scholarship

    Funding for 1 or 2 years of graduate study in the United Kingdom in any field at participating universities.

    • Graduating seniors or recent alumni
    • All disciplines
    • U.S. citizens
    • Cumulative GPA of 3.7 or higher
    • Seeking scholars, leaders, and contributors to improved UK-US understanding

    Mitchell Scholarship

    Funding for 1 year of post-graduate study in any discipline offered by an institution of higher learning in Ireland.

    • Must be 18 years of age or older, but not yet 30, on September 30 of the year of application

    NSF Graduate Research Fellowship Program (GRFP)

    Funding for 3 years of graduate study in research-based master’s and doctoral programs in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) and STEM education. 

    • Graduating seniors (accepted to grad school by May 1 of award year) or first and second year graduate students
    • Current grad students may apply only once, during first or second year
    • Graduate applicants who have experienced a career break may be eligible (see solicitation)
    • Science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) and STEM education
    • U.S. citizen, national, or permanent resident

    Payne International Development Fellowship Program

    Funding for a two-year Master's degree in a field related to the USAID Foreign Service (see program website for details), two internships, and appointment as a USAID Foreign Service Officer upon successful completion of the program.

    • Graduating seniors or recent alumni planning to enter a two-year Master's program related to the USAID Foreign Service in Fall 2024
    • Fields related to the USAID Foreign Service (see program website for details)
    • U.S. citizens
    • 3.2 GPA or higher
    • Commitment to future employment with the USAID Foreign Service

    Full financial support to pursue graduate study at the University of Oxford.

    • In addition to scholarly achievement, applicants must clearly demonstrate leadership capacity and commitment to the common good
