Business Activities and Export Control
Business Activities at Stony Brook University (SBU)
Operational offices (academic and non-academic) that support the mission of the university can be both export compliance checkpoints and areas of risk for export compliance.
Examples of operational offices: human resources, finance, procurement, environmental health and safety, international programs, sponsored programs, technology licensing, information technology, facility and service centers, shipping/receiving and building and/or laboratory management.
Export Control Compliance Role of Operational Offices
SBU interacts with international entities, persons, and partners through many different avenues. Staff in these departments should be familiar with the export regulations and how they apply to their operational areas.
Examples of compliance checkpoints (this is not a complete list):
- Restricted Party Screening of potential foreign collaborators, visitors, employees, vendors, etc.
- Review of payments to embargoed or sanctioned countries
- Identification of export controlled items at time of purchase
Example of areas of risk (this is not a complete list):
-
Foreign person employee access to export controlled items (i.e. equipment, supplies, technical data, technology, software) - deemed export - without the proper U.S. government authorization.
