Degree Requirements

In addition to the minimum requirements of the Graduate School, the following are required:

The English MA is a 30-credit coursework degree consisting of multiple elements. Students must complete ten-three credit courses with a minimum 3.0 GPA.

A. Two courses in Language and Rhetoric (6 credits)

EGL 506 - Studies in Literary Theory 3 credits
EGL 509 - Studies in Language and Linguistics 3 credits
EGL 592 - Problems in Teaching Writing or Composition 3 credits

B. Three Topics Courses (9 credits)

At least two different topic areas must be selected.

EGL 584 - Topics in Genre Studies 3 credits
EGL 585 - Topics in Cultural Studies 3 credits
EGL 586 - Topics in Gender Studies 3 credits
EGL 587 - Topics in Race, Ethnic, or Diaspora Studies 3 credits
EGL 588 - Writing Workshop 3 credits

C. Four Electives (12 credits)

Electives must be 500-level English courses. With Program Director approval, 600-level English or relevant outside courses from other departments may count.

D. Master’s Thesis (3 credits)

Students must submit a MA thesis.
