Applying to the Ph.D. Program

The application deadlines for the PhD program are December 1, 2023 (priority deadline), January 5, 2024 (international deadline) and January 5, 2024 (final deadline).

Before you apply to the doctoral program, you are strongly advised to contact a faculty member. First, review the research interests and publications of the program faculty and identify one or two faculty members whose interests coincide with yours. Then, contact the faculty member with a detailed description of specific research questions that interest you, your educational and research background, and any special skills, training or experience you may have. Ask if the faculty member would be interested in being your temporary advisor. Students apply for, and are admitted to, the program, not to specific research labs. However, prior contact with and support of a faculty member would increase your chances of being admitted to the program.

Applications are online via the Graduate School.

In addition to completing the application form and statement of purpose, applicants must provide the following:

(1) transcripts of undergraduate and (if applicable) graduate course work
(2) three letters of recommendation
(3) and a non-refundable application fee of $100.00. (Please note that applications will not be processed without the $100.00 fee.)
(4) TOEFL or IETLS scores if English is not your primary or native language
(5) CV

Applying to the M.A. Program

The application deadlines for the M.A. Program are January 15, 2024 (domestic priority deadline), January 15, 2024 (international deadline), and April 15, 2024 (final domestic deadline).

Early submission of materials is strongly encouraged and can result in early acceptance into the program. The M.A. program only admits students in the fall.

The Department does not offer support for M.A. students; loans and other financial aid may be available through the University. Stony Brook University has among the lowest tuition and fees of any university in the U.S.
