Center Hosts Ribbon Cutting for New Wastewater Research & Innovation Facility

Tuesday, July 9, 2019 – The New York State Center for Clean Water Technology hosted a ribbon cutting ceremony for its new Wastewater Research & Innovation Facility (WRIF). The facility is designed to test advanced nutrient removal systems to be used as alternatives to traditional on-site septic systems. To conduct research, the facility utilizes a constant supply of domestic wastewater from the Suffolk County Department of Public Works' (SCDPW) existing wastewater pumping station at Parson’s Drive.

Experiments taking place at the WRIF include optimization of wood chip boxes for denitrification, effects of silt additions to denitrifying bio-filters, biofilm formation on synthetic media, and novel continuous flow Nitrogen Removal Biofilters with re-circulation and pre-aeration patterns.

Speakers at the event included Senator Kenneth P. LaValle, Assemblyman Fred W. Thiele, Jr., Senator Todd Kaminsky, Assemblyman Steve Englebright, Department of Environmental Conservation Region 1 Director Carrie Meek-Gallagher, Deputy County Executive for Administration Peter Scully, and Citizen's Campaign for the Environment Executive Director Adrienne Eposito.
