2017 Annual Technology Review of Innovative / Alternative Onsite Wastewater Treatment Systems
The New York State Center for Clean Water Technology (CCWT) and the Suffolk County
Department of Health Services (SCDHS) have published the Annual Technology Review
for Innovative / Alternative Onsite Wastewater Treatment Systems (I/A OWTS). The 2017
Annual Report was completed in 2018 based on data collected in 2017. The objective
of the CCWT and SCDHS programs is to develop, foster, and promote affordable, reliable,
and effective I/A OWTS that reduces the total nitrogen load to ground and surface
waters originating from archaic cesspools and septic systems. An associated objective
is the reduction of contaminant loads, such as pharmaceuticals and personnel care
products, via I/A OWTS technology.
This annual review is provided as a NYSDEC performance measure that presents the efforts
made by both grant recipients (SCDHS and CCWT) to accomplish the goals set out in
the grant. This review evaluates and compares current OWTS performance standards with
best available technologies, which is to include technologies that have attained approval
by Suffolk County.
