L. J. Altman Fellows
The Department of Chemistry has created the L. J. Altman Undergraduate Teaching Fellowship to honor an exceptional student who has made important contributions to the Department’s educational program in organic chemistry. The goal is to encourage the use of peer education, particularly one-on-one tutoring, to help address the challenge of teaching complex subjects like organic chemistry in large enrollment courses. The recipient will be selected from 70 of last year’s students who helped teach 1100 students this year. The recipient will receive a monetary stipend from an endowment created in honor of Lawrence J. Altman, one of Stony Brook’s extraordinary scientists and educators.
2020-2021
The Fellow in AY 20-21 is:
Yu Hao 'Andy' Jiang was awarded the L.J. Altman Undergraduate Teaching Fellowship for his invaluable service to the students of the molecular science sequence (CHE 331 & 332). Andy displayed outstanding teaching skills during his first year as a TA. As a Head undergraduate TA his second year, Andy showed and continues to show excellent leadership mentoring our undergraduate teaching staff.
2016-2017
The Fellow in AY 16-17 is:
Sarika Hira was awarded the L.J. Altman Undergraduate Teaching Fellowship for her invaluable service to the students of the molecular science sequence (CHE 331 & 332). Her teaching skills were highly effective in both the classroom and office hours settings, and she gave an impressive review session presentation.
2015-2016
The Fellows in AY 15-16 are:
Edward Miller was awarded the L.J. Altman Undergraduate Teaching Fellowship for his invaluable service to the students of both organic chemistry (CHE 321 & 322) and the molecular science sequence (CHE 331 & 332). Ed showed outstanding teaching skills during his first year as TA. As a Head Undergraduate TA the following year, Ed show excellent leadership mentoring our large undergraduate teaching staff.
Jeffrey Wechter was awarded the L.J. Altman Undergraduate Teaching Fellowship for his invaluable service to the students of organic chemistry (CHE 321 & 322). Jeffrey went above and beyond the call of duty. He not only exhibited highly effective teaching skills, but he arranged his own weekly mini review sessions for students. He organized the creation of exam review packets, providing in depth explanation. Jeffery genuinely enjoys helping others.
2014-2015
The Fellow in AY 14-15 is:
Peter Giattini was awarded the first L.J. Altman Undergraduate Teaching Fellowship for his invaluable service to the students of organic chemistry (CHE 321 & 322). Peter displayed great teaching skills, and he was an excellent presenter during review sessions. He could have easily passed as a faculty member, with his assuredness and professional demeanor. Peter was devoted to improving how we teach organic chemistry. His unique contribution led to the creation of the Head Undergraduate TA position.
