How to Apply to be a CBTP Trainee

WHY APPLY to the Chemical Biology Training Program?

Applications due: June 7
Notification of acceptance: June 21
Start date: Fall term
Before starting the application, PLEASE READ the following:
ELIGIBILITY:
- Will have just completed your first or second year by June 1
- Are in the Chemistry, BSB, Molecular Pharmacology, or Microbiology/Immunology graduate program
- Have already taken (or plan to take) CHE541 (BSB520), CHE542, and CHE543
- Are doing research at the chemistry-biology interface*
*If your advisor is not already faculty in the CBTP program (check https://www.stonybrook.edu/commcms/cbtp/classes/rotations.php) please email CBTP@stonybrook.edu with your advisor's name and a brief description of your research before completing the application.
We welcome applications from all students who meet the eligibility criteria regardless of citizenship status. While our NIH funding can only be used to support US citizens and permanent residents, we have matching funds that can be used for partial support of students from any country.
BE PREPARED TO UPLOAD:
A pdf with the following information:
- Research project title and abstract (1 paragraph) and description of current career goals (1 paragraph)
- Table detailing mentor, institution, and total hours for any undergraduate research experience.**
- Curriculum vitae including your education, any publications, and teaching and professional experience
** This is helpful information, but UG research is not required.
ALSO REQUIRED:
- Request letters of reference from your advisor and co-advisor*** to be sent directly to CBTP@stonybrook.edu before June 1.
*** The co-advisor should be someone who can provide input on the more biological or more chemical side of your project, depending on the primary discipline of the advisor and project.
IMPORTANT NOTE:
Please notify your advisor that if you are accepted to the program, they will be responsible for finding non-federal sources to cover the difference between the stipend allowed by the training grant (currently $27,144) and the stipend set by the student's graduate program. The advisor will be asked for an appropriate account number upon a student’s acceptance.
