Welcome from the Chair

Welcome to the Department of Applied Mathematics and Statistics (AMS) at Stony Brook University! Our diverse Department brings together 25+ core faculty, 45+ teaching/research and affiliated faculty, 6 staff, and about 500 graduate students (including AMS and Data Science) and 800+ undergraduate students. Collectively, we seek to educate a future population of highly capable and inquisitive students and to conduct groundbreaking, interdisciplinary research while we excite people about applications of mathematics and statistics in the modern world.

Within AMS we offer both undergraduate (BS) and graduate (MS, PhD) programs with specialties in computational applied mathematics, computational biology, statistics, operations research, and quantitative finance. We also offer undergraduate and graduate Data Science programs, jointly with the Department of Computer Science. We are excited about the role that mathematics and statistics have in applications of Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning in all areas of modern life and especially in science, engineering, and technology. Our award-winning faculty strive to make the learning experience of highest quality for our students at all levels.
