About the Internship

The Academic and Transfer Advising Services Internship is an enriching college experience that combines classroom learning and application of that learning. The internship provides outstanding sophomores,  juniors and seniors the opportunity to gain leadership experience and advising knowledge, improve personal and professional skills, and explore career aspirations while providing assistance to others.

ADV 488

The internship consists of a two semester-long training program, much of which occurs in the weekly, seminar–style course, ADV 488, each semester. Active participation is required and training will occur through the analysis of issues relevant to academic advising, case studies, reading and discussion of current events and relevant articles, role plays, and presentation skill training and practice. The internship also includes written assignments, creation of a lesson plan for your ADV 101 class, and periodic quizzes. There will be a formal syllabus, homework, and firm deadlines. Additionally, ATAS Interns perform supervised work in the office, serve as a teaching assistant in ADV 101, and conduct outreach activities to the university community.

SELECTION CRITERIA

We are looking for a diverse group of undergraduate students who possess the following qualities and qualifications:

  • Good academic and disciplinary standing (minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0)
  • Minimum of 45 total earned credits (Sophomore, Junior or Senior standing)
  • Ability to commit to two semesters (fall and spring)
  • Ability to enroll in and attend weekly seminar class, ADV 488, on Mondays, 2:00 PM - 3:20 PM
  • Interest in helping transfer students transition to Stony Brook University
  • Ability to work with diverse students, staff and community members
  • Flexibility, dependability, patience, maturity, strong communication skills, and a commitment to learning

 

 

TIME COMMITMENT

ATAS Interns attend two training sessions prior to the start of the fall semester and can expect to devote approximately 10-12 hours per week to internship responsibilities during the fall and spring semesters.

  • 4 hours per week: Work in ATAS at the front desk welcoming students and answering the telephone; and/or work at the office computers assisting students with their registration and scheduling of classes.
  • 2 hours per week: Serve as a teaching assistant (TA) for a first semester seminar class for transfer students (ADV 101).
  • 3 hours per week: Prepare assignments and attend weekly seminar class, ADV 488, Mondays, 2:00 PM - 3:20 PM.
  • 20 hours per semester: Outreach with other ATAS Interns to undergraduate students by organizing events and presentations regarding academic guidelines, degree requirements, and academic support.
  • 10 hours per semester: Work with professional advisors (i.e. shadow advising sessions, participate in committees, or assist with advising projects).

 

 

 

 

INTERESTED IN APPLYING?

Interested students must complete an application via Handshake and participate in an interview and selection process. This takes place during the spring semester prior to the first semester of internship participation. The required application materials include a resume, a cover letter, planning grid and a list of two references. The application will open around early March on Handshake for candidates to apply to.  Interviews usually get conducted in late March and offer letters will go out early April.

References

Please list the name, title, department or company, telephone number, and email address of two individuals who will serve as your professional references. Please be sure to alert the individuals you select to the fact that you are listing them as a reference. All references will be contacted via email or telephone prior to selection.

  • At least one reference must be a Stony Brook University faculty or professional staff member (i.e. professors, instructors, graduate teaching assistants, residence hall directors, quad directors, advisors).
  • Please note, although peer references from an undergraduate student leader are welcomed, only one of your references may be a student leader (i.e. orientation leader, resident assistant, commuter assistant, peer academic success coach).
