The MA program is designed to give students an opportunity to carry out graduate work in linguistics without making the long-term commitment required for a doctoral degree. The application process is competitive, with incoming classes generally consisting of 2 or 3 students, selected from both US and international applicants. The curricular focus of the MA LIN is on theoretical rather than applied linguistics, so students interested in applied linguistics at the MA level are encouraged to consider the MA TESOL program instead.
Please note: The deadline for MA linguistics admissions is April 15.
1) If you apply after April 1, you should upload an electronic copy of your transcript with your application in ApplyYourself. If you have already submitted your application, email a copy of your unofficial transcript to Michelle Carbone ( email@example.com). Unofficial transcripts will be accepted for the application and will also be valid for matriculation. An official transcript, however, must be submitted during the Fall 2020 semester, prior to registration for the Spring 2021 semester.
2) If you have questions, please contact the department via email ( firstname.lastname@example.org). Access to telephone messages is limited, and so response to telephone messages will suffer delay.
3) Due to the worldwide closure of testing centers, the Department of Linguistics is waiving the GRE requirement for applications to its MA programs for Fall 2020. This includes applications to the MA-TESOL, MA in Computational Linguistics, and the MA in Linguistics.
For international applicants, scores from the Duolingo English test will be accepted in lieu of scores from IELTS or TOEFL. For Duolingo links, visit: https://www.stonybrook.edu/sb/graduatebulletin/current/admissions/requirements/english.php
