MA TESOL + NYS Certification Program

TESOL Education Program Director: Annette Shideler

This program is designed for candidates who are seeking both the M.A. in TESOL and New York State certification to teach English Language Learners in grades Pre-K-12. This program combines the intellectual rigor of the academic discipline with the opportunities for professional growth provided by immersion in authentic classroom contexts, which may include pre-schools, elementary and secondary schools, college and university classes, museums, and adult education programs.

  1. Professional Preparation – 33 credits
    • CEE 505 Education: Theory & Practice
    • CEF 547 Principles and Practices of Special Education
    • PSY 595 Human Development
    • LIN 524 TESOL Pedagogy: Theory and Practice (Methods I)
            & LIN 579 Field Experience N-12
    • LIN 529 TESOL Pedagogy: Language & Literacy Development Through Content Areas (Methods II)
            & LIN 579 Field Experience N-12
    • LIN 527 Structure of English
    • LIN 571 TESOL Pedagogy: Curriculum Design and Evaluation 
           & LIN 578 Field Experience in Adult & Tertiary Contexts
    • LIN 574 Managing Instruction, Assessment, and Resources*
    • LIN 581 Supervised Student Teaching grades N-6*
    • LIN 582 Supervised Student Teaching grades 7-12*

    *Prerequisite: GPA of 3.0 or better , permission of department, proof of having passed the The Academic Literacy Test (ALST).

  2. Linguistics & Foundations – 15 credits
    • LIN 522 Phonetics
    • LIN 530 Intro to General Linguistics
    • LIN 541 Bilingualism
    • LIN 532 Second Language Acquisition
  3. And one of the following:
    • LIN 542 Sociolinguistics
    • LIN 525 Contrastive Analysis
    • LIN 526 Analysis of an Uncommonly Taught Language
    • LIN 555 Error Analysis
  4. Two Years (12 credits) of language other than English
  5. All teacher candidates must complete the following:
    • NCE 600 Identifying & Reporting Child Abuse
    • NCE 601 Identification & Referral of Substance Abuse
    • NCE 602 Prevention & Identification of School Violence
