Dorit Kaufman’s research focuses on the attrition of the native language among immigrant children in an English-dominant context, the psycholinguistic and sociolinguistic processes that trigger the progressive decline of the native language, emergent literacy, and the development of oral and written narration in bilingual and attrition contexts. Her research in teacher education and pedagogy examines the teaching of English to speakers of other languages (TESOL), content-based language instruction and learning, the impact of reflective practice, constructivist pedagogy, professional standards and assessment, and interdisciplinary inquiry and collaboration for professional growth. She has published extensively and presented at numerous conferences nationally and internationally. Her publications appeared in the TESOL Encyclopedia of English Language Teaching, in books and in journals that include TESOL Quarterly, Action in Teacher Education, and Annual Review of Applied Linguistics. She is co-editor of several books: Content Based Instruction in Higher Education Settings (2002) and Content-Based Instruction in Primary and Secondary School Settings (2005) (with Jodi Crandall), and Professional Development of International Teaching Assistants (2006) (with Barbara Brownworth).
Kaufman received the 2001 New York State R. Neal Appleby Outstanding Teacher Educator Award and the 2002 State University of New York (SUNY) Chancellor's and President's Awards for Excellence in Teaching. She taught English to speakers of other languages in school and university settings across four continents and developed courses for undergraduate and graduate courses that included: TESOL Pedagogy: Theory and Practice; Content-Based Language and Literacy Development; Managing Instruction Assessment and Resources; Computers in Language Teaching; and The Bilingual Child . She mentored hundreds of teacher candidates in diverse school settings and provided professional development for practicing teachers worldwide.
Kaufman served as director of Stony Brook University Professional Education Program (2001-2017) leading the University's teacher and leader education programs through three successful national accreditation cycles. Nationally and internationally, she served as member of the Board of Examiners of the National Council for the Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE) and as member of the International TESOL Standards Committee. She also served as Chair and member of the International TESOL Professional Development Committee and Chair of New York TESOL - Long Island region. She was awarded multiple single and collaborative interdisciplinary grants, including funding from the U.S. Department of Education for Project MORE (Mentors for Richer Education); Fund for Improvement of Post- Secondary Education (FIPSE) for Teacher Education Program Assessment (TEPA) (in collaboration with 15 SUNY Universities); New York City Board of Education for: A World of Opportunities: Literacy through Research, and several grants from New York State Education Department and BOCES/BETAC Intensive Teacher Institute in Bilingual Education and English as a New Language, and from the State University of New York (SUNY). At Stony Brook University, she received Presidential mini-grants for Innovative Teaching Projects; Dialogues Across Differences; and Departmental Diversity Initiatives .
