APPLY: SLATE APPLICATION SYSTEM
For admission to the M.A. Linguistics program, the followings are required:
Bachelors degree and Official transcripts
A bachelors degree is required. Students must present evidence that such a degree
will be awarded by the time they begin graduate work.
You will need to upload copies of your transcripts onto the SLATE application system
in addition to mailing.
Two official copies of all previous transcripts for all colleges and universities
attended, including junior and senior college and graduate transcripts (if applicable).
If transcripts are in a language other than English, certified English translations
are required in addition to the original documents. Transcriptions should be mailed to:

EXCEPTION: You do NOT need to supply official transcripts from coursework taken at Stony Brook University, since we have access to those.
Cumulative
GPA
≥ 3.0
A minimum cumulative grade point average of 3.0 (or its foreign equivalent) on a four-point
scale. If you have attended graduate school and obtained a master’s degree, and the
GPA
is over 3.0, then the
GPA
of the undergraduate school can be below 3.0 for regular admission.

Graduate Record Examination ( GRE)
Stony Brook Graduate School Policy has long required a GRE general test score from all applicants. The Graduate School at Stony Brook has decided to waive the GRE General Test requirement for the period of two years, effective immediately. Applicants will not have to submit GRE general test scores for the 2021-2022 application cycle.

Writing samples
Generally, a paper written for a course you have taken.
Foreign language proficiency
Equivalent to two years of college work in a language other than English with a grade
of C or better.
TOEFL
or IELTS Score
Non-native speakers of English must have obtained a
minimum total score of 90 on iBT TOEFL or 6.5 on IELTS.
Acceptance
Students must be accepted by both the Department of Linguistics and the Graduate School.
