Affordable Excellence.
As the State University of New York (SUNY) flagship, Stony Brook's tuition rate is among the most affordable of all top-tier universities in the nation. SUNY tuition and fees are nearly 15% lower than the national average for public universities and 50% lower than private institutions.
This value also extends to out-of-state graduate students enrolled in fully online programs who receive a discounted tuition rate with a savings of more than 40%. (Restrictions apply.)
Cost of Attendance
Tuition and fees as of Fall 2024
New York Residents
- Part-time students who are New York State residents pay $1,874.46 for a three-credit course (or $22,493.52 for the complete 12-course program).
- Full-time students who are New York State residents pay $7,111.01 each 12-credit term, or $21,333.03 for the full program (excludes health insurance; see below).
Non-New York Residents
- Out-of-state fully online students pay $2,156.46 for a three-credit course (or $25,877.52 for the complete program).**
- Out-of-state on-campus students pay $3,752.46 for a three-credit course (or $45,029.52 for the complete program).
- Out-of-state students pursuing full-time study that includes on-campus courses pay$14,621.01 for each 12-credit term, or $43,863.03 for the full program. This cost excludes health insurance (see below).
Domestic Health Insurance
Full-time students who do not have their own health insurance coverage will be billed $2,336.29 for Fall 2024 and $3,237.21 for the Spring/Summer 25 time period. Detailed information is provided on the Student Health Services website
International Students
International students pay the non-NYS resident tuition and fees listed above, plus F-1 and J-1 students are charged a $160 fee. In addition, they will need to enroll in a student health insurace plan:
- Fall 2024 International Student Health Insurance plan: $1,066.67 ( $37.50 MedEx). Effective from 8/15/24 - 1/14/25.
- Spring-Summer 2025 International Student Health Insurance plan: $1,478.01 ($52.50 MedEx) Effective from 1/15/25 - 8/15/25.

**Students who do not live or work in NY and are matriculated in a fully online master's programs may be eligible for this special rate. Please refer to the guidelines for out-of-state students in fully online programs before applying.
