Leadership Development in Family and Community Partnership Planning
A NYSED-funded Diversity Leadership Initiative Program
This virtual six week series offers participants the opportunity to deconstruct the effective elements of partnership while addressing the needs of a diverse school community. We are targeting a diverse group of participants to develop a leadership platform that is grounded in the belief that all students can learn, reinforced by “it takes a village to raise a child” approach. The seminar series allows school teams to become better acquainted with the community in which their school is located, and in developing strategies for engaging stakeholders in school improvement. We offer a series of data-driven seminars focused on increasing the pool of school personnel who see school-community partnerships as a central component in their practice.
This seminar, offered every 2-3 weeks during the fall and winter, is designed to provide CTLE credit. We will recruit 20-25 assistant principals or teacher leaders for each seminar series and will be working with them as whole groups and in small, facilitated groups throughout the series. Priority will be given to diverse assistant principals/teachers and/or schools with diverse teams.

September 29 – Overview of Issues Facing Educators
- Conduct a needs assessment analysis of a school; data-driven decision making
- Neighborhood Walking Tour
- Developing a collaborative project
October 13 – Building a Partnership Team
- Creating a vision and sharing it with potential partners
- Reviewing exemplary practices
- Identifying key stakeholders and their roles
October 27 – Creating Structures for Community Involvement
- Principles of effective collaborative projects
- Exploring organizational structures of select stakeholders
- Creating a governance system to facilitate collaboration
November 17 – Using External Funding to Develop School/Community Partnerships

December 8 – The Collaborative Leader, Professional Development and Portfolio Building
- Building a collaborative culture in the school
- Nurturing connections with a higher education partner

Hazel M. Carter, PhDDr. Carter was recognized by the City University of New York as one of the recipients of Major Institutional Grants for Public Service awards and received the Trinidad and Tobago Heritage award from the New York City Council, has been cited by the United States Congress for her work in community engagement. She is a Board member of the American Foundation of the University of the West Indies, New Alternatives for Children, Global Women’s Fund, the International Consortium of Caribbean Professionals, and the Metropolitan Council of Educational Administration Programs. Dr. Carter received a Doctor of Philosophy degree in Higher Education Administration from New York University. She holds a Master of Science degree in Non-Profit Management from the New School University; a Diploma in Education and a Bachelor of Arts degree in History and Social Sciences, both from the University of the West Indies in Trinidad. |
About The Diversity Leadership Initiative
The Diversity Leadership Initiative was made possible through the work of the Metropolitan Council of Education Administration Programs (MCEAP) executive committee and has received funding from a New York State Education Department (NYSED) grant. The grant's objectives are to help create a pipeline for emerging school leaders, to conduct and disseminate research on the effective strategies being used in the field, and to foster new and better leadership skills to integrate diversity and inclusion efforts deeply into school priorities, culture and operations.
