Bilingual Education Extension

Advanced Graduate Certificate

Stony Brook University’s 16-credit advanced graduate certificate leads to the NYSED Bilingual Education Extension Annotation and is offered fully online.

The program is designed for fluent, bilingual (English/Spanish) speakers who hold an appropriate NYSED certificate. The program provides the knowledge and skills necessary to teach effectively in English and Spanish in New York State schools.

Certificate Requirements

Students will complete 5 courses (16 credits) in one of two pathways. Credits for each course are noted. Course descriptions are published in the SPD Bulletin (CEF courses) and the Graduate Bulletin (all others).

Pathway 1: For Teachers

For English; Mathematics, Biology, Chemistry, Earth Science, Physics; Social Sciences, Spanish-English Bilingual Extension

  • CEF 574 Bilingual Education in the Schools (4 credits)
  • CEF 526 Foundations of Teaching English Language Arts to Bilingual  Learners (3 credits)
  • CEF 536 Methods of Teaching Second Language and Content to Bilingual  Students (3 credits)
  • LIN 542 Sociolinguistics, or LIN 532 Second Language  Acquisition (3 credits)
  • LIN  541 Bilingualism (3 credits)
Pathway 2: For Speech Language 

For Speech-Language Pathology, Spanish-English Bilingual Extension

  • HHS 574 Speech and Language Pathology in the Schools, Bilingual Clinical (4 credits)
  • HHS/CEF 526 Foundations of Teaching English Language Arts to Bilingual  Learners (3 credits)
  • CEF/FLA/SPN 536 Methods of Teaching Second Language and Content to Bilingual  Students (3 credits)
  • LIN 542 Sociolinguistics, or LIN 532 Second Language  Acquisition (3 credits)
  • LIN  541 Bilingualism (3 credits)

    The program is designed for fluent, bilingual (English/Spanish) speakers who hold an appropriate NYSED certificate. It provides the knowledge and skills necessary to teach effectively in English and Spanish in New York State schools.

    For languages other than Spanish, please contact the program director to discuss the options available to you. 

  • Master's Options

    Master's Options

    For those students who would prefer to continue their graduate education and pursue a master's degree, all of the courses in this program can be applied to the Master of Arts in Liberal Studies.  Course from this Speech Language Pathology pathway may be used to fulfill requirements for the Master of Science in Speech Language Pathology. A separate application is required.

    Prospective students should contact the respective directors of each master's program for more before they complete 12 credits.

    Payment Plan
    Stony Brook recognizes the need for helping students manage the expenses of higher education. To this end, the University offers a Time Option Payment Plan (TOPP), a program that allows students to make equal and consecutive payments throughout the year.

    Admissions Requirements

    • Candidates must hold a master's degree, or be enrolled in a master's degree program, from an accredited institution of higher education
    • Candidates must be practicing, professionally licensed, in-service teachers seeking an additional certification or those currently enrolled in a teaching certification program
    • Candidates must have a graduate GPA of 3.0 (Exceptions may occasionally be made with appropriate documentation and at the discretion of the director of the program)
    • ACTFL OPI rating in Spanish of Advanced Low or above

    candidates will submit

        • Transcripts showing completion of a master's degree program or enrollment in such a program. Candidates currently enrolled in a master's degree program are also to submit undergraduate transcripts. Transcripts must be sent electronically from the issuing istitution to spd_transcripts@stonybrook.edu.
        • Evidence of initial, professional or permanent teaching certification (or enrollment in a program leading to such a certification).
        • A personal statement describing the candidate's experience and this program's role in advancing the candidate's professional goals.
        • Proof of an official ACTFL OPI rating in Spanish of "Advanced Low" or above.

    Important Note: To expedite the application and admissions process, please upload and/or send all materials to the SPD contact as required by your program at the time of submission of your application. Please do not send any SPD application materials to the Graduate School.

    The priority deadline for Fall admission is July 15. Completed application packages received after this date will be accommodated as space permits.
