Peter Martin (MA, 2023)
Peter Martin, a 2023 graduate of the M.A. in Marine Conservation and Policy (MCP) program, is a local from Rocky Point, NY. He began his academic journey in environmental studies at Stony Brook University before pursuing his masters in the MCP program. During his time in the program, Peter interned with Cornell Cooperative Extension (CCE), researching ocean acidification and its impact on important local species like the horseshoe crab. His work led to a career with Cornell, in the Flax Pond Marine Lab in Old Field, NY, where he now works as a Marine Program Assistant. There, he contributes to shellfish restoration projects around Long Island, including efforts to grow and restore ribbed mussel populations around the city.
One of Peter's most impactful experiences in the MCP program was MAR: 557: Case Study and Project Planning Seminar with Dr. Ellen Pikitch. This course connected him with organizations offering capstone and internship opportunities— ultimately leading him to his internship with Cornell and his current position in the Flax Pond Marine Lab.
