2025 NIH R-Series Boot Camp for Early Career Faculty

The NIH R-Series Boot Camp will prepare a select cohort of up to 10 early career faculty for NIH R-series grant submissions. Bootcamp participants will work one-on-one with the AtKisson Training Group to successfully prepare NIH R-series grant proposals for submission by February 5, 2027. Members of the cohort will benefit from a full proposal review, a mock review panel, and one-on-one meetings with ATG to provide constructive feedback on your proposal. The anticipated time commitment will be a minimum of five hours, in addition to time spent preparing the proposal materials.

Eligibility

  • Must be a full-time Assistant Professor
  • Strongly encouraged to attend the March 5, 2025, NIH R-Series Academy Workshop 2 with the AtKisson Training Group. Register by 2/19.
  • Must commit to participating in one four-hour mock review panel on June 10, 2025, and two thirty-minute one-on-one meetings with ATG (scheduled individually)
  • Must commit to submitting the proposal developed during the boot camp to the NIH by February 5, 2027.

How to apply

All applications must be submitted viaInfoReady.You can sign in using your Net-ID and your @stonybrook.edu email address. Please allow sufficient time to familiarize yourself with the portal prior to submitting your application.

Submissions must be uploaded in full no later than 11:59pm EST on March 31, 2025, via the  2025 NIH R-Series Boot Camp portal  in InfoReady. All documents must be submitted as PDFs in the relevant fields using 11-point font or larger.

The required documents are as follows: 

    • NIH Biosketch (5-page limit) utilizing the current NIH biosketch template .
    • Specific Aims (1-page limit) that concisely state the goals of the proposed research and summarize the expected outcome(s), including the impact that the results of the proposed research will have on the research field(s) involved. List succinctly the specific objectives of the research proposed (e.g., to test a stated hypothesis, create a novel design, solve a specific problem, challenge an existing paradigm or clinical practice, address a critical barrier to progress in the field, or develop new technology).
    • Significance Statement (1-paragraph limit) briefly describing the importance of the problem or critical barrier to progress that the proposed project addresses, and explaining how the proposed project will improve scientific knowledge, technical capability, and/or clinical practice in one or more broad fields.
  • Letter of Endorsement from your chair 
    • This brief letter should endorse your participation in the boot camp and confirm that you will have sufficient time to commit to participating in the boot camp and preparing the proposal.

Please note: Name of PI, department(s), and tentative project title will be entered directly into the application portal.

Selection Criteria

Compliant applications will be reviewed for alignment with NIH funding priorities, the potential for funding by NIH, the qualifications of the PI, and evidence of having sufficient time to commit to the boot camp. Selected applicants will be notified by May 10, 2025 and will be required to confirm participation.

Post-selection Requirements

Participants will commit to submitting the workshopped proposal to the NIH by February 5, 2027. PIs who fail to submit their proposal to the NIH by the February 5, 2027 deadline may not be eligible to apply for future boot camp opportunities. Exceptions will be made on a case-by-case basis. Any expected delays in submitting to the NIH must be communicated to the Office of Proposal Development as soon as possible to avoid ineligibility for future opportunities.
