Moore Inventor Fellows Program
OVPR is actively accepting applications for this internal competition. If you are interested in applying to this program, you must submit a pre-application through the internal competitions submission portal. Pre-application requirements are listed in the announcement below.
The Office of the Vice President for Research invites applications to the Moore Inventor Fellows Program. The Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation seeks to identify outstanding inventors and innovators who harness science and technology to enhance the conduct of scientific research, strengthen environmental conservation, or improve the experience and outcomes of patient care. The program aims to support inventions at an early stage that could lead to proof-of-concept of an invention or advance an existing prototype that tackles an important problem. Stony Brook University has been invited to nominate TWO candidates.
Please see below for details. If you are interested in applying, you must submit the internal competitions form by Friday, October 18, 2024. Pre-applications for internal review and selection must be uploaded to the portal as a single PDF document. The competition code for this program is LC202465.
WHAT DOES IT FUND: The scope of the call is intentionally wide: proposed projects do not need to fall within the current funding priorities but should be broadly within the program areas of foundation interest (science, environmental conservation, and patient care). For patient care, inventions should resonate with the foundation's focus on improving the experience and outcomes of patients with solutions that improve clinical diagnosis.
APPLICANT REQUIREMENTS: Candidates must be faculty, research scientists, postdocs or other full-time staff. Candidates must be no more than 10 years past receiving the terminal advanced degree in their field (M.S., Ph.D. or M.D. received on or after 2015).
AWARD: $675,000 over 3 years.
The Moore Foundation requires that each host institution contribute $50,000 in annual direct support of the inventor’s work. OPD will assist the two PIs that are selected to advance to identify the required cost share.
SPONSOR DEADLINE: Nominations due November 15, 2024. Full applications due December 13, 2024.
A complete pre-application should comprise of the following:
-
- Statement of Invention (no more than two pages, including citations; single-spaced, 12-point font with one-inch margins). The first paragraph should describe clearly and without jargon the invention, the problem it seeks to address and its potential impact. The statement of invention should also include the following information: I. Description of invention; II. Stage of invention; III. Feasibility; IV. Current funding; V. Importance to science, environmental conservation or patient care; VI. Potential impact; VII. Risk (please describe any technical risks that might lower chances of success and what you will do to mitigate these risks. For example, “If A doesn't work, we'll do B.”); and VIII. Approach for measuring progress during the grant term.
- Summary CV (no more than two pages).
- Budget Narrative (one page) that outlines how the grant funds will be used.
- Letter of Reference (no more than two pages) that evaluates the promise of the applicant and the invention. This letter can be from an individual within Stony Brook University or from another institution.
