NIH Enhancing Science, Technology, EnginEering, and Math Educational Diversity (ESTEEMED) Research Education Experiences (R25 Clinical Trial Not Allowed)

OVPR invites applications for the NIH Enhancing Science, Technology, EnginEering, and Math Educational Diversity (ESTEEMED) Research Education Experiences (R25 Clinical Trial Not Allowed). The program focuses on early preparation of undergraduate students in bioengineering or STEM fields relevant to NIBIB’s scientific mission. Stony Brook University can submit ONE application for this program. Please note: to be eligible, there must be an honors program in place that is open to students in the junior and senior years and that promotes STEM and entrance into a Ph.D. program.

WHAT DOES IT FUND: The ESTEEMED program is designed to foster the development of undergraduate freshmen and sophomores from diverse backgrounds to pursue further studies and careers in bioengineering or STEM fields.

APPLICANT REQUIREMENTS: 

• The PD(s)/PI(s) should have a background in bioengineering or a closely related field in engineering or the physical/computational sciences and should have demonstrated experience in the applications of these fields in medicine and/or biology. 
• The proposed PD(s)/PI(s) should hold a research or clinical doctoral degree (e.g., Ph.D., M.D., or equivalent), and have clearly demonstrated training/mentoring credentials, particularly of individuals from diverse backgrounds, including students from underrepresented groups.
• The PD/PI must have a regular, full-time appointment (i.e., not adjunct, part-time, retired, or emeritus) at the applicant institution.

AWARD: Up to $325,000 in direct costs per year. Project period may not exceed 4 years.

A complete pre-application should comprise of the following:

• • Research Education Program Plan (no more than 4-pages) including:
    • Overview of the research education plan and how it will provide added value to the participants' education.
    • A brief description of the planned activities, including the Summer Bridge Program, Academic Year Activities, and Summer Research Experience, and how these activities are useful and build upon one another.
    • A brief description of the honors program, and how participants from the ESTEEMED program are expected to transition to the honors program and/or interact with honors students.
  • Budget and Budget Justification (no more than one page)
  • List of potential program faculty and their intended roles (no more than one page)
