Robert Jones

Inspector Bob Jones has been a member of the Stony Brook University Police Department for over 19 years. Bob has served in various functions of the department including Patrol, Field Training, Community Relations and Special Events & Activities. Prior to his career, Bob earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Speech Communications and Rhetorical Studies from Hofstra University. In 2007, when the opportunity arose to join the department’s Community Relations Team, he said “it was a great chance to bring my previous public speaking training to our outreach and community policing programs.” Bob went on to serve five years as a Community Relations Team Officer adding to his contributions through educational programs, university events and positive campus interactions. Bob has been involved in the University Police sponsored events such as Coffee with a Cop and Game Day, which goals are to bridge the gap between the police and university community. He said recently, “I hope I was able portray the department in a positive light during these challenging times.”
In December of 2011, Bob was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant and remained in the Patrol Division where he was primarily responsible for supervising the overnight shifts often being the highest-ranking police official on duty. In the summer of 2018, Bob was a UPD safety and security representative for the multi-law enforcement Joint Operations Command (JOC) at the 2018 US Open at the Southampton campus. In 2021, he was most recently involved with the University’s Incident Command System as a department representative at the University’s COVID-19 Vaccine and Testing Pods.
During his career as part of the Stony Brook University Police Department, he has received a Life Savings Award, a Meritorious Award and 3 Excellence Service Awards for his handling of situations with the right amount of poise and leadership. His goal is to enhance public safety relations with all students, staff, faculty, patients and visitors, ultimately working together to keep Stony Brook University and its community safe.
