Joining the Peace Corps Prep Program
1) Determine Your Eligibility
The Peace Corps Prep Program is open to all undergraduate students. Note that while Stony Brook welcomes all students to join the Prep Program, to become a Peace Corps Volunteer you must be a U.S. citizen who is at least 18 years old to serve.
2) Learn About the Program
It is recommended that you attend a Peace Corps Prep Information Session. Information sessions for the 2024-25 year are as follows:
- Monday, September 9 | 1 pm to 2 pm | Register Now
- Tuesday, November 12 | 6:30 pm to 7:30 pm | Register Now
- Tuesday, February 4 | 2 pm to 3 pm | Register Now
- Monday, April 7 | 1 pm to 2 pm | Register Now
If you are unable to attend an information session, please review the program information in full before applying or schedule a Peace Corps Prep Consultation on Handshake by navigating to “Special Programs.”
3) Apply
Once you understand the program requirements, you can apply to join the Peace Corps Prep Program during open application periods.
The Fall 2024 application will close on September 22nd.
Spring 2025 application information will be announced.
4) Meet Your Peace Corps Prep Coach
You will be assigned a Peace Corps Prep Coach from the Center for Service Learning and Community Service who will work with you individually to ensure that you are on track to complete the program.
You will meet with this coach at least once each fall and spring semester. Peace Corps Prep Consultations can be scheduled on Handshake by navigating to “Special Programs.”
5) Meet Program Requirements
During your time as an undergraduate at Stony Brook University, you will make progress toward completing the requirements for the Peace Corps Prep Program. All requirements must be met upon graduating from your undergraduate program. This includes:
- Training and experience in a specific work sector
- Foreign language skills
- Intercultural exchange and competence
- Professional and leadership development
6) Complete the Peace Corps Prep Program
Once all requirements are completed, you will submit your official application to formalize your experience in the Peace Corps Prep Program. Completed applications can be emailed to your Peace Corps Prep Coach.
