ByteDance Covered Applications Prohibition


What is the ByteDance covered applications prohibition? 

Government contracting clause that restricts the use of ByteDance applications (covered applications) on information technology, university or personally owned equipment (such as computers, tablets and phones) that store, access or transmit federal contract information and data (used to any extent on a government contract).


What are considered ByteDance applications?

ByteDance Limited or an entity owned by ByteDance Limited.  ByteDance includes commonly used programs such as TikTok, Lemon8, and Capcut). 


How have these prohibitions been implemented for federally funded awards? 

The federal government has implemented these prohibitions through the  Federal Aquistion Regulations (FAR) that are included in federally sponsored contracts.


Federal Contracts 

The inclusion of 52.204.27 Prohibition on a ByteDance Covered Application (June 2023) in a federal contract or subaward from a federal contract will implement this prohibition for the specified project.
