Stony Brook University Annual Non-Discrimination Statement
April, 2025
At Stony Brook University, we value all students, employees, and job candidates as
unique individuals, and we welcome the variety of experiences they bring to our institution.
As such, we have a strict non-discrimination policy. Stony Brook University policy
prohibits discrimination and harassment based on race, color, or national origin,
including shared ancestry or characteristic, religion, sex, pregnancy, familial status,
sexual orientation, gender identity or expression, age, genetic information, disability,
protected veteran status, or any other characteristic protected by law with regard
to any employment practices, including but not limited to: recruitment, hiring, selection
for training, promotion, transfer, compensation, job assignments, benefits and/or
other terms, conditions, or privileges of employment.
We must familiarize ourselves with the policies that affect our daily interactions
with others on campus, whether students, faculty, staff, visitors, or patients in
our care. Please take the time to review the Equal Opportunity and Discriminatory
Misconduct Policy and Sexual Misconduct and Reporting Policy. Both policies are vital
to creating and maintaining a community where our diverse population can live, work,
study, and recreate in an atmosphere of tolerance, civility, equity, equal employment
opportunity, and respect for every individual.
Additionally, Stony Brook University will continue to provide qualified applicants
and employees with reasonable accommodations, as required by law, and will ensure
that all employment decisions are based only on valid job requirements.
It is our policy that employees and applicants will not be subjected to harassment,
intimidation, threats, coercion, or discrimination because they have engaged in, or
may have engaged in, the following activities: (1) filing a complaint; (2) assisting
or participating in an investigation, compliance evaluation, hearing, or other activity
related to the administration of Section 503 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973, as
amended (Section 503), the Vietnam Era Veterans' Readjustment Assistance Act of 1974,
as amended (VEVRAA), or any other federal, state or local law or regulation regarding
Equal Employment Opportunity; (3) for opposing any act or practice made unlawful by
Section 503/VEVRAA or their implementing regulations, or (4) exercising any other
right protected by such laws or regulations.
The Office of Equity and Access (OEA) ensures compliance with federal and state reporting
initiatives and requirements and implements the non-discrimination policy. To report
discrimination or sexual misconduct, please contact Marjolie Leonard, the Assistant
Vice President, Title IX, and ADA Coordinator, at Marjolie.Leonard@stonybrook.edu.
The OEA is in the Administration Building, Room 201; phone: 631-632-6280. For more
information on how to make a report, visit their website at www.stonybrook.edu/reportit
or email them at reportit@stonybrook.edu.
As a public university, Stony Brook University upholds the fundamental right of freedom
of speech. We believe that open expression and debate are essential to a thriving
academic community. However, this right is not absolute and does not extend to speech
that incites violence, harassment, or discrimination.
We take reports of discrimination and harassment very seriously. Our trained staff
has established processes to review and address these reports as neutral fact-finders.
We employ evidence-based decision-making to ensure a fair and just outcome for all
parties involved.
We are committed to fostering a safe and inclusive environment where everyone feels
respected and valued.
