As one of the premier music programs in the United States, the Department looks to its friends and colleagues to help provide financial support for the numerous and various musical events that it presents at Stony Brook’s Staller Center for the Arts and in New York City. Most of the over 350 concerts, recitals, masterclasses, and colloquia are free and open to the public.  The Department of Music is grateful for contributions to some of our main funds, including:

• The Department of Music Fund for Excellence

  This is a general fund supporting a vast variety of activities including Masterclasses and Colloquia by visiting artists and scholars, guest conductors, composition workshops, composer showcases, community music programs, purchase of instruments, activities for students, among many other things.

• Colin Carr Scholarship Fund

  The Colin Carr Scholarship Fund is for financial aid to encourage the finest graduate student cellists worldwide to come to Stony Brook to study in the Department of Music.

• Stony Brook Opera Fund

  This fund supports the Department of Music's three opera events each year, Opera Scenes in the Fall, and two operas, the second generally staged or semi-staged, in the Spring.

• Gilbert Kalish Endowment

  This Scholarship Endowment, named after pianist and Distinguished Professor Gilbert Kalish, assists in the support of a student pianist or pianists in the Department of Music.

• Jazz Fund for Excellence

  This fund assists in the presentation of jazz, including invitations to guest artists, purchase of music and equipment, and other integral and program-enhancing benefits to the program. The Jazz Program at Stony Brook is overseen by Director of Jazz Studies Roxy Coss, GRAMMY Award-winning Saxophonist, Founder and President of Women In Jazz Organization (WIJO), and Co-Artistic Director of the Brubeck Jazz Summit.

• Early Music Account

  This fund supports the Early Music Program at Stony Brook, including purchases and repair of instruments, purchase of music, support for travel for the ensemble, and other worthwhile equipment and activities.  Winner of the 2012 Thomas Binkley Award "for outstanding achievement in performance and scholarship by the director of a university or college early music ensemble," Arthur Haas directs Stony Brook's award-winning Baroque Ensemble.

• Community Music Program

  This fund provides need-based and merit scholarships for families enrolled in the Children's Music Program, Pre-College Division, Adult Chamber Workshops and Summer Music Camps.

• Katherine and Bob Bayer Scholarship Fund

  This fund will provide support to graduate students in the Department of Music. Special consideration will be given to students who are pianists and subsequently students who perform a string instrument.
