PhD Candidate
Hannah Waterman is a Ph.D candidate in Critical Music Studies. In 2019, she received a B.Mus with honors in music theory from UT Arlington. Her dissertation, “Harmonic Cosmology In Early Modern Scientific Thought,” argues that exercises in speculative music theory drove new modes of knowledge production in the early seventeenth century. Hannah also uses critical theory to develop new approaches to the analysis of popular music and Internet culture; she participated in the 2025 School of Criticism and Theory at Cornell University. The recipient of the 2023 President's Award for Excellence in Teaching by a Graduate Student, Hannah has taught courses in music theory, music history, and writing. She is also an active musician and artist specializing in the Baroque cello. Currently, she is working as the Graduate Assistant at the Humanities Institute at Stony Brook.
