Learner Corpora: Construction and Explorations in Chinese and Related Languages

As corpus construction and corpus linguistics evolve rapidly to become an indispensable methodology in linguistics and related field over the past several decades, research in learner corpora (LC), which deals with the construction, annotation, and analysis of learner production, has gained considerable momentum as an area at the interface of corpus linguistics and applied linguistics. In this talk, I first provide a brief overview of major works done in the field. I then describe some of the applications of LC in teaching Chinese as a second language, including Chinese as a heritage language. Finally, I discuss some future directions in LC, focusing on both the challenges and payoffs of working with multimodal L2 corpora and investigations of interactional competence with a corpus linguistic approach.

Dr. Hongyin Tao
Hongyin Tao is Professor of Chinese language and linguistics at UCLA. He currently is also an honorary Distinguished Chair Professor at the National Taiwan Normal University.
