Stony Brook University Offers MFA in Film - Groundbreaking, Affordable Project Driven, Led by Legendary Killer Films Producer Christine Vachon

New York and Southampton, NY, April 2, 2015 - Stony Brook University announced its new groundbreaking and affordable Master of Fine Arts (MFA) in Film. With locations in Manhattan and Southampton, Stony Brook's innovative three-year MFA program is led by Graduate Director Christine Vachon, Co-Founder of legendary indie powerhouse Killer Films. Stony Brook and Killer Films share a mission to provide students an environment where they can learn, create and pursue their art without signing on to a lifetime of debt. This new program emphasizes original storytelling and is taught by a faculty of the most distinguished practicing artists in the country.
Students receive real-world, practical experience at an affordable SUNY tuition and an opportunity to work on movies produced by Killer Films. Students in the 45-48 credit MFA program have worked on several Killer Films' productions, including STILL ALICE, which earned the 2014 Academy Award® for "Best Actress in a Leading Role" for Julianne Moore, who also won the Best Actress Golden Globe Award, Screen Actors Guild Award, BAFTA Award, and Independent Spirit Award, and the forthcoming NASTY BABY, starring Kristen Wiig. Killer has produced over 80 acclaimed features, from Academy Award® winning BOYS DON'T CRY and Academy Award®-nominated FAR FROM HEAVEN to Emmy Award®-winning HBO mini-series MILDRED PIERCE, and soon-to-be released CAROL, directed by Todd Haynes, starring Cate Blanchett and Rooney Mara.
Students interested in pursuing an MFA in Film at Stony Brook/Killer Films are invited to join us on Wednesday, April 22 for an Open House on the "Director as Entrepreneur." Guests include Elizabeth Wood, whose documentary and three short films led up to her feature film directorial debut with WHITE GIRL, co-produced with Killer Films, and writer/director/actor Douglas McGrath (EMMA). The MFA program focuses on screenwriting, directing, and producing, with production cycles culminating in a feature screenplay, a portfolio of short films including an MFA thesis film or a final producer's package. Applications are accepted on a rolling basis. Deadline to qualify for financial aid is May 15, 2015; for domestic students not applying for aid, the deadline is July 1.
