Welcome from Executive Director Magdalene Brandeis

The Stony Brook MFA in Film and Television Writing
Join a community of world-class filmmakers—directors, screenwriters, and producers—gathered in a dynamic urban arts incubator to master the art of visual storytelling.
Our program is led by Indie Legend, Artistic Director Christine Vachon, co-founder of Killer Films. With a 30-year track record producing over 100 independent films and series, she leads a faculty of working professionals dedicated to immersive training in screenwriting, directing, and producing.
The MFA in Television Writing, helmed by “pilot-whisperer” Alan Kingsberg, offers one of the world's most extensive curriculums. Designed to prepare students for professional writers rooms and content creation, the track boasts a history of immediate alumni success.
Our core course, Acting for Writers and Directors brings students from both programs together.
No other program offers this opportunity to study Filmmaking and TV writing at the heart of the indie world—New York City—at Stony Brook University state school prices. We welcome filmmakers and writers from around the globe to apply.
