Harvard University Press publishes English translation of Kannada Mahabharata edited by Center Director

The Mattoo Center is delighted to announce that Harvard University Press' Murty Classical Library of India has published volume one of Kumaravyasa's classic Kannada Mahabharata. This jewel of world literature is a groundbreaking fifteenth century Kannada interpretation of the classical Sanskrit epic.

The Center Director, SUNY Distinguished Service Professor S.N. Sridhar, was honoured to edit the volume, which was translated by a distinguished team of renowned scholars, including Professors C.N. Ramachandran and N. Hegde. Professor Sridhar and the team are currently working on the second volume.

The publication of volume one of this seminal text was greeted with immense public enthusiasm in Bangalore, and widely covered in both print and digital Indian media. In early January  2024, the translation and editing team of scholars, represented by Professors Hegde, Ramachandran, and  Sridhar, gave a week-long Master Class series of lectures at the Bangalore International Centre. Over 500 members of the public attended these engaging discussions.

The Center looks forward to shortly publishing a series of video interviews with Professor Sridharabout the global literary importance of this new publication, as well as its key significance in Indian and South Asian intellectual history.
