This fall, Stony Brook University welcomes Tianchi "Maverick" Mo as a PhD candidate
in Computer Science. The international student from China, who rose to fame in his
home country after receiving admission to several prestigious U.S. universities despite
physical limitations due to cerebral palsy, ultimately chose Stony Brook because of
the support and outreach he received.
Upon learning his story, Stony Brook reached out to him to determine what support he would need to ensure his success at Stony Brook. The Office of Global Affairs organized several units on campus, including the China Center, Visa and Immigration Services, Campus Residences, the Student Accessibility Support Center, and the College of Engineering and Applied Sciences (CEAS) to ensure Maverick had knowledge of and access to the resources he would need to realize his dream of obtaining a PhD in America.
Together these offices arranged for accessible housing for Maverick and his father, a special purpose shuttle to assist with his commute to classes, an Accessibility Support Counselor, and assisted Maverick's father in obtaining an extended visa to remain in the U.S. as his caretaker during his studies.
