Update on Global Medical Education

by Mark Sedler MD, MPH, Associate Dean for Global Medical Education

Update on Global Medical EducationStony Brook Medicine continues to offer students, residents, and faculty opportunities at more than 20 partner sites around the globe.  This year there have been several exciting developments.  Most recently, the School of Medicine, together with our partner Fundación Barceló in Argentina, won a prestigious international competition that promotes innovative international exchange programs - the 100K Strong in the Americas - sponsored by the MetLife Foundation in partnership with the U.S. State Department. This award will support Stony Brook medical students at an underserved, rural, site in Santo Tomé, at the same time that medical students from Argentina will be hosted by Stony Brook Medicine next summer.

The Office of Global Medical Education is also engaged in a major health sector project in Haiti that is part of the Learning Through Development initiative coordinated by SUNY Global Affairs and sponsored by the Kellogg Foundation.  Dr. Christina Maxis from the Dept. of Ob-Gyn, together with Dr. Sedler, has taken the Health Sector lead on the development of a Health Center and affiliated educational and research initiatives at a new site in Arcahaie Haiti.  Over the summer, as part of this initiative, a medical student Mindy Baucicot carried out a critical needs assessment in Arcahaie, and a formal proposal for the new center is currently under development.

In addition, many students and faculty mentors have been active participants in global health research, education, and clinical electives.  Last year there were more than 50 Stony Brook medical students engaged in more than 25 countries.  One outstanding example is that of Danielle Gladstone, a senior medical student who plans a career in Pediatrics and Global Health, who spent two months as an intern with the Global Hepatitis Programme (GHP) and the Department of HIV/AIDS at the World Health Organization headquarters in Geneva, Switzerland. Danielle worked on multiple projects related to treatment of Hepatitis C in children and adolescents, the triage and management of Hepatitis E in acute outbreak settings, and service delivery of viral Hepatitis B and C.

The School of Dental Medicine has also been especially active in promoting opportunities in Global Health and has executed a new agreement with World of Smiles to carry out medical missions in the Dominican Republic. Last year, dental students and faculty participated in outreach programs in Jamaica, Chile, and Madagascar.
