Hispanic Heritage Month Awards and Scholarships
The application deadline for all Hispanic Heritage Month Awards and Scholarships is
EXTENDED to MONDAY, OCTOBER 20, 2025. Winners will be announced at the annual Hispanic Heritage Month Closing Ceremony
on Monday, October 27, 2025. You can nominate students/faculty /staff HERE (you must be logged onto your Stony Brook University Gmail account to access these
forms).
**Eligibility for all awards and scholarships is regardless of citizenship status.**

Student Awards and Scholarships
HHM Community Service Award
- Purpose: To recognize an undergraduate or graduate Stony Brook University student who has taken time to serve the Latino community and whose presence and kindness has had a positive impact on the university.
- Eligibility: All interested candidates must be:
- Currently enrolled as an undergraduate or graduate student at Stony Brook University
- Have a minimum 2.5 cumulative GPA
HHM Academic Award
- Purpose: To recognize an undergraduate or graduate Stony Brook University student who has demonstrated outstanding academic achievement in all subjects and is active in the Latino and campus community.
- Eligibility: All interested candidates must be:
- Currently enrolled as an undergraduate or graduate student at Stony Brook University
- Have a minimum 3.5 cumulative GPA
HHM Leadership Award
- Purpose: To recognize an undergraduate or graduate Stony Brook University student who has assumed a leadership role(s) in any Stony Brook recognized society, club, sorority, fraternity or association that serves the Latino community.
- Eligibility: All interested candidates must be:
- Currently enrolled as an undergraduate or graduate student at Stony Brook University
- Have a minimum 2.5 cumulative GPA
Mariposa Education Award
The Mariposa Undergraduate Education Award is a $500-$1,000 award for books and other educational materials given to two SBU undergrads of an immigration status (undocumented, DACA, international) that deems them ineligible for many US scholarships. Status will remain confidential, and LACS will purchase the students' materials for them. The award will be usable through the end of the 2025-26 academic year. Major and minor concentrations are open.. Applications are due by October 13.
Faculty and Staff Awards
HHM Faculty/Staff Award
- The purpose of this award is to recognize a Stony Brook University Faculty or Staff member who has demonstrated outstanding contributions, service, outreach, and commitment to the Latino community.
Las Madrinas Award
- "Madrina" is "Godmother" in Spanish. The purpose of this award is to recognize a woman who is a Stony Brook University Faculty or Staff member who has contributed to the quality of life, educational growth, and development of Latino students, and who has also served as a mentor and guide in all aspects of student life. Candidates for this award should be nominated by students.
Los Padrinos Award
- "Padrino" is "Godfather" in Spanish. The purpose of this award is to recognize a man who is a Stony Brook University Faculty or Staff member who has contributed to the quality of life, educational growth, and development of Latino students, and who has also has served as a mentor and guide in all aspects of student life. Candidates for this award should be nominated by students.
HHM Latino Faculty Recognition Award
- The purpose of this award is to pay tribute to a faculty member of Hispanic/Latino descent who has truly served this academic institution, as well as to honor their contributions to the university and the students.
The application deadline for all Hispanic Heritage Month Awards and Scholarships is October 12, 2025, no later than 11:59 PM. Winners will be announced at the annual Hispanic Heritage Month Awards Ceremony.

Donations
During Hispanic Heritage Month (October), we recognize the contributions of Hispanics
and Latinos and celebrate their heritage and culture. October is filled with various
events, programs are held, prominent guest speakers are invited, and academic scholarships
are awarded. This is all made possible by generous contributions. We welcome and
encourage your support to keep Hispanic Heritage Month an important presence at Stony
Brook.
