We are excited to share that a new academic department—Technology, AI, and Society—is in development at Stony Brook University. While the official announcement is forthcoming, this new department is already taking shape and sparking momentum across campus. Building on the legacy of the Department of Technology and Society (DTS), DTAS will expand our research and educational focus to meet the urgent challenges and opportunities at the intersection of artificial intelligence and societal impact.

The formation of DTAS is supported by a $5 million SUNY Transformation Grant aimed at strengthening interdisciplinary education and research in AI, ethics, policy, and society. Learn more about this landmark SUNY investment here. We anticipate a formal announcement in Spring 2026.
