What Does Research Mean to Me?

“Research is a fascinating endeavor for answering questions and solving problems that will change our lives. It allows creativity, inspiration, and innovation to come together to generate new knowledge and advance our society.”

“Research allows me to study and sometimes to understand new problems. But it also allows me to express my individuality as a human being.

The way I interpret reality during the research process is a purely solitary process, even when I am part of a closely knit team or community.

I love sitting in front of a blank white paper and allow my imagination to play with different ideas and solutions. I am still fascinated by the unexpectedness of research.

However, I continue to search for a way to create the same sense of beauty and awe like through music and painting.”

“Going through school we are asked many questions which we have to learn to give answers to. When you do research you have to come up with the questions. A properly phrased research question can lead to results that change how we understand the world we live in and change the world, hopefully, for the better.”

"Research for me means having a free mind, critical thinking, and creativity. It also means group effort and lots of discussion. I try to train my students for doing research so that they teach me new things down the road, and we together look for answers that would, hopefully, improve the quality of life."

“Research means a lot to me. It is a path to freedom. It means curiosity, creation, and persistence and even fulfills fundamental needs of my life. As a power engineering researcher, I dedicate my research to transforming today's power grids into tomorrow's autonomic networks and flexible services towards self-configuration, self-healing, self-renewal, self-optimization and self-protection against grid changes, renewable power injections, faults, disastrous events and cyber-attacks.”
