STEM Adventures:
Bringing K-12 Students to Research Labs and Facilities 
Jericho High School

With AP exams concluding in mid-May, teachers began to field student trips to encourage the next phase of scientific discovery in renewable energy and advanced technology. A group of 40+ students from Jericho High School’s AP Environmental Studies and AP Computer Science toured Stony Brook University’s R&D Park on May 31st supported by David Herbert, a New York State Master Teacher at Jericho.  Students were quoted as remarking, "It's great to see what we are learning in school is actually being done in the field.” Following their visit to the battery storage lab, where graduate, postdoc, and research students led the demonstration, one attendee stated, "It was interesting to hear from the students what they are working on rather than from the professors." After visiting both the AERTC and CEWIT, students enjoyed a sponsored lunch from Amogy, where Nick Mannarino spoke about ammonia-powered vehicles and entrepreneurial ventures.
