The College of Engineering and Applied Sciences at Stony Brook University’s faculty body includes distinctions such as 66 NSF CAREER awards; 16 SUNY Distinguished Professorships; members of the National Academy of Engineering; as well as recipients of the National Medal of Science and the National Medal of Technology.

Professors Scarlatos and Koga Recognized with Chancellor Awards
Professor Tony Scarlatos of the Department of Computer Science is the recipient of a SUNY Chancellor Award for Excellence in Teaching, and Professor Maya Koga Endoh of the Department of Materials Science and Chemical Engineering is the recipient of a SUNY Chancellor Award for Adjunct Teaching. The Chancellor’s Awards for Excellence are system-level honors conferred to acknowledge and provide system-wide recognition for consistently superior professional achievement and to encourage the ongoing pursuit of excellence. Twenty-seven members of Stony Brook University’s faculty and staff have received the 2023-2024 State University of New York (SUNY) Chancellor’s Awards for Excellence. News 12 Interviewed Professor Farhadzadeh
News 12 recently interviewed Ali Farhadzadeh, Associate Professor in the Department of Civil Engineering, about the recent storm's affect on Long Island's infrastructure, particularly in Glen Cove.
Professor Farhadzadeh’s research interests focus on nearshore hydrodynamics, coastal processes and beach morphology, wave-structure interaction, resilient coastal protection systems, storm surge and wave modeling and coastal flooding and inundation. He is a registered Professional Engineer (PE) with several years of industry experience both in the US and abroad.
Professor Glimm Celebrated
A workshop on The Modeling and Simulations in Fluids was held on September 7 and 8, 2024. Funded by the National Science Foundation, the workshop honored Professor Jim Glimm who celebrated his 90th birthday. Glimm, a member of the National Academy of Science and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, was also awarded the National Medal of Science for his contributions to computational fluid dynamics. The event was organized jointly by Remi Abgrall from the University of Zurich, Tulin Kaman from the University of Arkansas and Gretar Tryggvason from Johns Hopkins University. The Institute of Computational and Experimental Research in Mathematics (ICERM) of Brown University also collaborated on this workshop which brought together researchers to discuss modeling and simulations of realistic fluid flows.
Korean Institute of Chemical Engineers Honors Professor Kim
The United States Chapter of the Korean Institute of Chemical Engineers (KIChE) has selected Professor Taejin Kim as the recipient of the 2024 James M. Lee Memorial Award. Kim, who also serves as the graduate program director for the Department of Materials Science and Chemical Engineering, studies the fundamentals and applications of heterogeneous catalysis in environmental and energy fields. His research group has explored the structure-activity relationship of catalysts through catalyst synthesis, characterization and catalytic performance evaluation. He will receive the award and present on his research during the 2024 AIChE Annual Meeting in October.
Newsday Interviewed Professor Li
Newsday recently interviewed Professor Li of the Department of Civil Engineering in regard to the possible repairs and restoration after the extreme rainfall. The storm caused much damage including the destruction of a section of Harbor Road which caused the failure of the dam and draining of Mill Pond in Stony Brook.
Professor Li, a civil engineer and geoscientist, has a strong interest in the geosystems that sustain the life and infrastructure above; and host water, wastes, and resources within. The overarching goal of his research is to advance the engineering of geosystems in the context of climate change, infrastructure resilience, and energy and water resources.
