The Stony Brook Solar Racing Team is an interdisciplinary student-run competitive organization at Stony Brook University. Students work together to research, design, produce, and test a solar-electric race boat for competitions held in April and Jine. Working independently in our machine shop, we produce a majority of the vessel in-house, such as motor controllers, drivetrain, composite molds, solar panels, control system, and various other mechanical/electrical devices. We also have many related research opportunities outside of the scope of competition, such as high voltage EVs and cutting-edge renewable energy.
MISSON
The Solar Racing Team is a student organization comprised of engineering undergraduates whose primary goal is building a carbon fiber solar-powered race boat for the Solar Splash International Intercollegiate Competition. The Solar Splash Competition takes place over five days with many on-water events sponsored by the IEEE Power Electronics Society (IPES).
Our dedicated members meet together weekly to work on the many projects for the upcoming competition. Students in our machine shop design and fabricate motor controllers, drivetrain, composite molds, solar panels, hydrofoils, control systems, and various other mechanical and electrical systems. Our members have many opportunities to hone their technical skills and improve their project management skills. The Solar Racing Team is truly passionate about promoting engineering careers and solar power today.
