Sociology and Mass Communications double major; minors in Women's, Gender and Sexuality
Studies and Health, Medicine, and Society
Where are you originally from?
I’m proudly from Queens, NY, which is one of the most diverse places in the world with a community that has shaped my values and passion for cultural understanding.
On Stony Brook:
Stony Brook University offered the perfect blend of academic rigor and affordability. I knew I wanted a university experience that would challenge me intellectually while still being accessible financially.
On her major:
I’m a double major in Mass Communication and Sociology with minors in Women’s and Gender Studies and Health, Medicine, and Society. I chose these areas because I’m deeply passionate about storytelling, social equity, and public health; especially as they relate to the liberation and well-being of women of color. This interdisciplinary path has empowered me to explore how media, society, and health intersect to impact marginalized communities.
Favorite class:
Without a doubt my favorite class was the Sociology of Human Reproduction with Professor Catherine Marrone. Her class was both eye-opening and validating. It sparked critical conversations around reproductive justice, healthcare access, and the lived experiences of women, especially those from underserved communities.
Interests and accomplishments:
I’m passionate about using communication, education, and advocacy to improve the lives of marginalized communities. Throughout my time at Stony Brook, I’ve worked hard to embody those values through both academic and civic engagement. I was honored to receive the SUNY Chancellor’s Award for Student Excellence, the highest recognition given to SUNY students for a combination of leadership, academic achievement, and service. I’ve also been inducted into the Phi Beta Kappa Honor Society and Sigma Beta Honor Society in recognition of my academic excellence and volunteerism. Additionally, I’ve made the Dean’s List every semester of my undergraduate career and will graduate Summa Cum Laude.
Plans for post-graduation:
This fall, I’ll be pursuing a graduate degree in Strategic Communication at Baruch College. I hope to combine advocacy, media, and marketing to help reshape public understanding around issues like women’s health and immigration.
Favorite SBU memory:
Being part of Jubilé Latino and performing in the Seawolves Showcase all four years of my undergrad has been one of the most meaningful parts of my college experience. From the late-night practices to the long e-board meetings, the stress, and the countless events we organized - it was a lot of work, but it was all worth it! Jubilé gave me more than just a creative outlet; it gave me a community. As one of the few Latine-centered organizations on campus, it offered me a space to feel seen, supported, and proud of who I am. I’ll always be grateful for the family we built together.
Advice for future Seawolves:
Make the most of your time here. Say yes to opportunities that challenge you, eat food you’ve never tried, talk to people from different backgrounds. The growth comes from the unfamiliar and that’s where the magic is
Parting thoughts:
I want to thank my fellow Resident Assistant staff for their unwavering support. Being an RA was one of the most time-intensive roles I’ve taken on, but it was also the most rewarding. The friendships, mentorship, and lessons I’ve gained from that experience have helped shape who I am today.
