On her major/minor:

I chose my areas of study because I believe in the power of legal reform and public policy to create lasting change, and have dedicated myself to understanding how governmental decisions can improve lives both domestically and abroad. Throughout my college career, I’ve worked on grassroots initiatives, policy making and advocacy, grant writing for various civic engagement and justice initiatives, and even worked at international government offices. While each experience was vastly different, ranging from legal research to creative art projects, they all allowed me to make a positive impact—whether on a local, national, or global scale.

Favorite class:

One of my favorite classes was SOC 248: Social Problems in Global Perspective with Rebekah Burroway. The topics were so relevant and we covered a huge variety of issues in just one semester. I think the success of the class was greatly in part due Professor Burroway’s enthusiasm and clear knowledge of the content. She made learning these subjects so interesting!

I also have to include my creative writing classes. Those are always so much fun! I’ve retaken the 305 workshop class so many times that I’ve lost count. It’s great to get together with other students who love creativity and storytelling as much as I do, share ideas, and grow as writers together. Furthermore, the professors are incredible. The community of the CWL department is absolutely amazing and unlike any other department I’ve known on campus.

Interests and accomplishments:

I have always loved theatre and any creative project— painting, dance, writing, and more! I’ve explored these interests through different clubs on campus and in my free time. I also love doing community service and social activism work. It’s very fulfilling to make a positive impact in my community and connect with other people through service. Additionally, at Stony Brook, I’ve found a new passion: boxing! This wasn’t something I had tried before, but I signed up for Pink Gloves Boxing at the Rec and really love the community and friendships I made there. I’ve also had some really incredible experiences with Alternative Spring Break Outreach and Pocket Theatre Club!

I’ve been involved with the Center for Civic Justice for three years as both an intern and then as the Undergraduate Coordinator. I spend most of my time at CCJ and love every second. In this role, I’ve done a variety of projects, initiatives, and policy work to help promote civic engagement and advocacy. Additionally, I have met some of my absolute favorite people through CCJ, and I know I will keep these friends for life!

Accomplishments:

  • Obama-Chesky Voyager Scholarship for Public Service Recipient
  • Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship Recipient
  •     Chancellor's Award for Student Excellence
  •     SUNY ACT for Excellence and Student Initiative Award
  •     Dean’s List & Summa cum laude

 Plans for post-graduation:

After graduation, I am heading to Tanzania to do a sustainable development research project focusing on public health policy and initiatives. After that, I am going to Spain for a law fellowship. When I return to New York, I am working with an entertainment PR company on film projects that promote social advocacy and awareness initiatives through media and creativity. Then, to wrap up my summer, I will be in California working on film sets and writer’s rooms on projects that similarly highlight diverse narratives and cultural perspectives.

Favorite SBU memory:

Through Stony Brook I have had the opportunity to go on three study abroad programs— Switzerland, Greece, and Tanzania— and study five languages— French, German, American Sign Language, Greek, and Swahili! Prior to my first study abroad trip, I had only been to two other countries. After studying abroad, I discovered my immense love for travel, subsequently have now been to six foreign countries, and have plans to travel to three more before the year ends! Learning foreign languages has granted me access to a world that would have otherwise been completely shut off to me— from making friends in another language to working at international offices. The memories I have made while traveling have been unforgettable.

Advice for future Seawolves:

Talk to people! Talking to people and staying connected with the campus is crucial for making amazing friends as well as for finding out about incredible opportunities. SBU offers so many great opportunities for students academically, professionally, and socially; the key is talking to others to find out about them!
