Career Competencies represent power skills employers are looking for in candidates.
Communication
Communication is the ability to articulate thoughts and ideas clearly in written and
oral forms, effectively speak in public, express ideas to others, and write/edit memos,
letters, and complex technical reports. Strategies for obtaining this competency include
writing stories and articles, improving listening, and practicing presentations.
Problem Solving
Developing strong problem solving skills allows an individual to identify, evaluate,
and create effective solutions based on data to solve problems. It is important to
practice this skill through different experiences by being proactive and consistently
looking for issues to solve or improve.
Teamwork
Being able to build collaborative relationships with others who represent diverse
cultures, races, ages, genders, religions, lifestyles, and viewpoints is important
when working in a team setting. Joining a student club or organization, intramural
team, or other team oriented experience will assist an individual in working on their
teamwork skills.
Technology
As technology continues to revolutionize the world of work, individuals entering the
workforce today should be able to adapt to new technologies and demonstrate the ability
to use digital technology to solve problems and complete tasks.

assignments, and build workplace engagement through the use of interpersonal skills.
Surrounding oneself by other great leaders is a great strategy when working on building
those qualities for yourself.

Being able to work effectively, participate in a team environment, and present yourself
well in the work setting will help you to stand out in the professional world. Seek
out opportunities to place yourself in situations that require professionalism.
Equity and Inclusion
Engaging in anti-racist practices that actively challenge the systems, structures,
and policies of racism in the world and in the workplace occurs when there is a demonstrated
awareness and skills practiced to engage people from different local and global cultures.
Career Management
Awareness of ones skills, strengths, knowledge, and experiences will give you the
ability to navigate your career path and pursue different opportunities. Create clear
and attainable goals you plan to achieve as you continue on your journey.
Global Competence
Understanding and respecting different cultures, nationalities, races, ages, genders,
sexual orientations, and religions creates an inclusive environment for all to thrive
in. Participating in global experiences will assist you in learning about other cultures
and how they interact in the workplace.
