Alessandro Pagano

Alessandro Pagano is a PhD Candidate in Japanese Language and Translation at University of Bologna, Italy. He earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Comparative Studies (English and Japanese) at the University of Naples “L’Orientale” in 2019, and a Master’s Degree in Asian Languages and Cultures at the same University in 2022, discussing a thesis in Modern Language Teaching entitled “Developing translation competence for an intercultural language learning: the case of Japanese language”.

Alessandro’s research interests focus on the Japanese language, applied linguistics, modern language teaching and translation. As a PhD Candidate he is investigating the sociolinguistics and pragmatics of the Japanese and Italian languages, the different forms of language learning, translation and translanguaging as learning tools, and the responsibility of intercultural communication, particularly related to the perception and translation of the Japanese “politeness”.

As a Visiting Scholar to Stony Brook University, he is working under the supervision of Dr. Eriko Sato on the intersection between translation and translanguaging in Japanese language/teaching.
